From April, employees will be able to ask what their colleagues who hold similar positions are paid.

Under the provisions of the Equal Pay Act, an employee can ask for salary details and other details about a 'comparator'. That is someone who does, or has done the same kind of job.

The employer must respond within eight weeks.

Although certain requests can be denied under data-protection law, the information must be supplied if the comparator provides consent or is it is ordered by an employment tribunal.

For further information visit the Department for Trade and Industry HERE.
